Class of 1971, BS in Chemical Engineering
Class of 1973, MS in Chemical Engineering

I created and sponsored the Practical Process Design Award for the College of Engineering Design Day in May 2025. There were eleven nominees, mostly chemical and environmental engineering teams, but also teams from biomedical engineering and mining engineering. The winning team of four chemical engineers designed a system to recover marketable salts from brine generated in oil production.

Chemical engineering design courses played a significant role in my career – starting with my first job as a process design engineering. Twelve years later I transitioned into the environmental field, retiring in 2015 as the air quality program manager for Navy facilities in California and Nevada. Now I live in northern San Diego County. I'm looking forward to participating in the 2026 Design Day program.

Since my retirement in 2002 I have remained active as president of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. I travel annually to the Philippines as visiting professor to Cebu Institute of Technology-University and maintain consulting with Environmental Managers and Auditors, Inc. This year I was invited to join the roster of Fulbright Alumni speaker’s program in honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

I have enjoyed a long and varied career at the interface of engineering and medicine, receiving my MS in chemical engineering, MD, and MPH degrees.
